Forester Intern
Location: Ely, Minnesota
Position Description:
This 32-week program is a rigorous work and learning experience
that provides exposure to the Forest Service, development and
training opportunities, and the opportunity to make a lasting
impression on generations to come. This position requires a
detailed oriented and self-motivated individual. The internship
will focus on Timber Sale Preparation and allow for the development
of knowledge, skills, and expertise to assist the Kawishiwi Ranger
District to reach its annual timber target. This job involves
supervising our 4 person timber crew, writing timber sale
contracts, appraising timber sales, checking sales for NEPA
compliance, creating cruise plans, cruising and marking timber,
laying out sale area boundaries, recommending units for treatment,
helping develop silvicultural prescriptions, reconning futures
sales, and other timber sale related duties. The supervision of the
4 person crew will not be part of the job during the internship but
would become part of the duties if converted to a full time
permanent position.

Layout Timber Sales
Mark Timber and Check Crew Timber Marking Quality
Scout Future Timber Sales and Make Treatment Recommendations
Relay Current Information to the Silviculturist and Participate in
the Development of Prescriptions
Check NEPA Mitigations and Make Sure Timber Sales are NEPA
Compliant
Create Timber Sale Maps

Qualifications:
A 4-year Forestry or a related Natural Resource Management Degree
is required. Skills in ARC GIS, TIM (timber information
management), Cruise Design, Excel, Tree Identification, Various
Cruising Techniques, and Technical Writing are all desired but
onsite training in these can also occur. Candidates need to be able
to hike through brush, snow, swamps, and dense vegetation in
temperatures ranging from -30 F to 100 F daily. Candidates also
need to be comfortable working by themselves in the forest in
remote locations that may not have cell service.
Benefits:
$16.25/hr or $650/wk.

Any additional company clauses, for example:
Ely, Minnesota is the Gateway to much of the Boundary Waters Canoe
Area Wilderness (BWCA). Ely is a small community (about 3,000
year-round residents) but has most services available. Highways do
not extend North or East of Ely and we are said to be at the end of
the road. The nearest town with a Wal-Mart and Target is Virginia
MN (pop. 8,000) and it is about an hour drive to the Southwest.
Duluth MN is the closest city, and it is about a 2-hour drive to
the South. Ely has one grocery store, a movie theater, a public
sauna, several year-round and some seasonal restaurants, several
hotels, one K-12 school with about 400 total students, and a small
community college. Summers in Ely are warm and humid with several
bug and tick seasons. Temperatures in the summer range from highs
in the 60's to highs in the 90s. Winters in Ely are cold with most
winters having several weeks with low temperatures of -30 F or
colder and highs at or near 0 F. Most winters the temperatures will
only rise above 32 degrees for a couple of days between November
and March. Common recreational activities in Ely are canoeing,
fishing, camping, boating, ATVing, hiking, ice-skating,
cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, winter camping, dog sledding
and ice fishing.

independent contractors and are self-employed. Independent
