Summary of Position:
This position is located at the University of Minnesota College of
Pharmacy, Duluth in Pharmacy Practice and Pharmaceutical Sciences
Department.
The laboratory of Dr. Amanda Klein in the Department of Pharmacy
Practice and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of
Minnesota, College of Pharmacy (UMN CoP) is seeking a highly
motivated Post-Doctoral Associate in the field of pain physiology
and molecular biology for an NIH/NIDA funded project studying the
role of adenylyl cyclase in modulating potassium channel activity.
This project is led by Dr. Klein, a scientist who is interested in
expanding the knowledge about chronic opioid use within the context
of chronic pain. The focus of this position will be on acquisition
and analysis of behavioral, imaging, and immunohistochemistry data,
as well as performing ex-vivo electrophysiology recordings. Other
methods to be used include primary and immortal cell culture and
transfection, in situ hybridization, and fluorescence imaging. Our
goal is to further our understanding of involved in sensory
processing, and potentially underlying central sensitization
features present in chronic pain and opioid exposure.
The employee will work under the guidance of Assistant Professor
Dr. Amanda Klein in her research laboratory, based on the Duluth
campus. The University of Minnesota, College of Pharmacy has been
at the forefront of preparing pharmacists to be leaders in health
care and society for over 125 years, and is consistently recognized
as one of the best pharmacy schools in the nation. The Klein lab is
part of a vibrant pain research community at the UMN
(http://pain.umn.edu/), with access to several resources including:
Viral Vector and Cloning Core, Mouse Genomics Core, Mouse
Behavioral Core, University Imaging Centers (UIC), and The
Institute for Therapeutics Discovery and Development.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
40% - Research Experimentation
Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, prepare
and conduct research experiments in the field of pain physiology.
This includes coordinating experiments with internal/external
collaborators.
20% - Collect and Analyze Data
Collect and analyze data, including periodical/literature search
and utilizing specialized skills.
15% - Writing
Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in
scientific journals and/or presentations. May also assist in grant
writing.
10% - Lab management
Oversight/supervision of Undergraduate and/or Graduate students, or
provide training in various research methods
5% - Data Presentation
Present data to PI and lab members on a regular basis. Present data
to collaborators inside and outside the University of Minnesota.
Attending Scientific Conferences and Meetings
5% - Lab maintenance
Lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance, and ordering of
supplies as needed
5% - Other duties as assigned
Supervision: None
Working Conditions:
The majority of the work will be performed in a general laboratory
setting. Work also includes travel for data presentation and may
also include nights/weekends to facilitate experimental
progress.

Qualifications
Degree and/or Credentials:
Ph.D., DDS, DMV, JD or MD or equivalent terminal degree is
required.
Degree in related field preferred: Neuroscience, Pharmacology,
Cellular Biology or other areas of biological sciences.
Required Qualifications:
PhD in neuroscience, or a related field.
Strong proficiencies with one or more software packages (e.g.,
GraphPad Prism, SPSS, Image J, Nikon Elements). Familiarity with R,
Python, and/or Matlab programming languages is a plus.
Quantitative and statistical skills
Comfortable with interacting with animal subjects
Demonstrated ability to complete projects as evidenced by
first-author publication(s)
Proficient writing skills, motivated and driven to publish in
peer-reviewed journals.
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to these requirements, the ideal candidate should have
a passion for self-learning, be inquisitive, critical
problem-solving skills and initiative to seek out the resources
necessary to achieve the project's goals
