Summary:
Responsible for oversight of the critical daily accounting functions of Superior National Bank (SNB) and its holding company, Keweenaw Financial Corporation (KFC). Leads a team of accountants and specialists to ensure that proper accounting controls are in place and valuable reporting is available, while adhering to month-end close deadlines and required internal controls.

Major duties & responsibilities:


  • Responsible for daily activities and employees of the Accounting Department
  • Oversees monthly financial statement preparation for the Bank and subsidiaries, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of reporting to senior management, Board of Directors, and Asset Liability Management Committee (ALCO). Ensures comparison of actual to budget and identification of material differences and/or key changes.
  • Maintains control over account reconciliation processes, ensuring all balance sheet general ledger accounts and internal deposit accounts are reconciled timely and outstanding items are appropriately addressed.
  • Manages the accounts payable function assuring effective controls over payment processing.
  • Oversees Annual Report development and timely and accurate coordination of supporting workpapers with external audit.
  • Ensures timely filing of financial information and reporting as required by external entities.
  • Responsible for financial statement preparation for the holding company, including monthly reporting to senior management, and quarterly reporting to the Board of Directors.
  • Oversees equity distributions and transfers from Bank to holding company.
  • Responsible for FDICIA compliance ensuring appropriate internal controls over financial reporting processes throughout the bank and holding company. Prepares required annual financial reports to comply with FDICIA.
  • Coordinates budgeting and forecasting processes with Finance and Accounting staff.
  • Assists with bank cash management programs and correspondent banking relationships, providing oversight of daily cash reconciliations and timely clearing of outstanding items
  • Assists in developing and updating the Capital Plan, including routine stress tests and compliance with regulatory capital minimums.
  • Oversees investment accounting activities in conjunction with the Investment Director and Accounting staff.
  • Oversees departmental audit activities, including regulatory, internal, and external audit. Ensures all audit activities are appropriately coordinated and assigned. Ensures outstanding audit reported findings are timely addressed.
  • Involved in purchasing decisions. Ensures appropriate oversight of fixed asset accounting processes, including coordination of tax implications with tax accountants.
  • Reconciles key general ledger and deposit accounts such as deferred tax assets, deferred tax liabilities and payroll accruals.
  • Serves in administrative role over financial computer systems, including general ledger core systems, accounts payable software, and other applicable systems.
  • Ensures adequacy of general ledger core system framework, establishing an efficient chart of accounts and appropriate control over general ledger interface processes.
  • Responsible for implementing new accounting pronouncements and ensuring compliance with general accounting standards.

    TAX

    • Maintains knowledge base of sales, use and withholding (SUW) tax compliance issues and regulations. Oversees timely and accurate filing of SUW state reports.
    • Prepares estimates and pays quarterly corporate federal and state income tax withholdings for the Bank and holding company. Coordinates tax calculations and supporting workpapers with the tax accountant. Ensures timely filing of annual returns.
    • Serves as primary contact with the Internal Revenue Service assigned to audit and examine federal income tax returns
    • Oversees annual 1099 reporting to customers and outside contractors.

      ASSET / LIABILITY MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE (ALCO)

      • Prepares and presents financial statements and other reports required for ALCO meetings. Provides insight on financial changes and potential concerns and successes.

      • Strives for continuous process improvements and efficiency throughout the department.
      • Performs other duties as required.
