Job Description--Summary The College of Engineering at Michigan Technological University invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Chair of the Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Department to begin July 1, 2021. The Chair will lead the MSE faculty in their mission of excellence in education, research, and service. We seek an individual with the vision and experience to elevate the department's prominence in research within the fields of materials science and engineering, further our strong tradition of education excellence, and grow our M.S. and Ph.D. programs.

The Chair is the chief administrative officer of the department and is responsible for the department's administration, hiring, promotion and budget as well as being the leader in continuously improving the culture of inclusion and excellence in teaching and research. The Chair serves as the primary liaison between the department and the College as well as with the rest of the University and external constituents, and is expected to foster collaborations both internal and external to the university that advance the department's mission. Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned) --- Serve as the chief administrative officer of the department with the responsibility for all aspects of the educational, research, and service activities within the department.
--- Provide strong leadership for excellence in teaching, research, and service while promoting a culture of safety, inclusion and continuous improvement.
--- Effectively engage the department and other stakeholders in executing the department's vision, mission and strategic plan, ensuring alignment of the department's vision, plan, and goals with those of the College and University.
--- Engage and collaborate with the College of Engineering's leadership council to help execute the strategic plan of the College.
--- Seek to partner and collaborate with other academic units and research centers on campus to create new strategic opportunities, initiatives, and/or synergisms that will enhance the reputation of the College and University
--- Manage the department's finances responsibly and strategically to achieve short and long-term goals.
--- Recruit, develop, and retain an outstanding and diverse faculty, support faculty in research and educational endeavors; and guide the mentorship of junior faculty.
--- Increase the recruitment and retention of a diverse population of students and staff.
--- Supervise department faculty and staff; conduct progress reviews of nontenured faculty and make recommendations on reappointment, tenure and promotion cases; conduct performance review of all department faculty and staff.
--- Increase funding for the department and College through individual and collaborative efforts and by leveraging existing resources.
--- Engage in generating resources through fundraising.
--- Establish relationships with alumni, academic, industry, and government groups to promote the goals of the department in academics and research and their funding.
--- Contribute to College and University advancement activities by reaching out to prospective donors, leading stewardship activities for current donors, and, as appropriate, leveraging department resources in support of growth of total resources available to support the department and College.
--- Serve as department spokesperson and advocate within the university and with external constituents; actively promote the success of the department's students, faculty, and staff.
--- Oversee and ensure quality of ABET and university assessment activities.
--- Provide leadership for activities to improve the quality of the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degree programs.
--- Proactively promote and conduct activities that engage students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds and demographics to cultivate and sustain an inclusive environment.
--- Identify safety-related knowledge, skills, abilities, and training needed for positions within the department and opportunities for continuous learning and improvement of safety.
--- Encourage continuous improvement practices among employees. Commit to applying continuous improvement strategies to strategic goals and leadership skills.
--- Other duties as assigned. Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements) An earned Ph.D. degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or in a field whose name, if it were to be the name of an ABET-accredited program, would require the program to meet the curricular requirements for a Materials Engineering program. Required Experience (minimum requirements) --- Demonstrated leadership experience in an academic, government, or industrial setting.
--- Scholarly products and activities appropriate for a tenured appointment at Michigan Tech.
--- Demonstrated experience successfully working with diverse individuals.
--- Experience in working with engineering programs at the university level. Desirable Education and/or Experience --- Demonstrated supervisory, budgetary, and resource allocation accomplishments in an academic, government or industrial setting.

Additional Information The MSE Department at MTU currently has approximately 100 undergraduates and 45 graduate students. Our undergraduate degrees awarded per year put us in the top half of undergraduate MSE programs profiled by ASEE and we routinely place > 95% of our students in the field. Our graduate students benefit from access to an outstanding technical staff and our exceptional materials processing and characterization infrastructure. The department takes a lead role in managing the Applied Chemical and Morphological Analysis Laboratory (ACMAL) and the Institute for Materials Processing (IMP), two shared facilities for materials research serving the University and guest researchers.
