The UMD Admissions Counselor, as a member of the UMD Admissions team, is responsible for the recruitment of prospective undergraduate students to the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) through territory management, travel, prospective student communication, admissions presentations, prospective student and family meetings, and candidate file review. This person will have significant travel responsibilities, which may include greater Minnesota, Wisconsin, Dakotas, and areas within or surrounding the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area. The Admissions Counselor plans and implements a student recruitment program designed to meet enrollment goals in a targeted geographic area with diverse student populations. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic, self-motivated, and results- oriented with the ability to think creatively and implement new initiatives. The ideal candidate will also have a talent for fostering relationships and providing excellent customer service to students, families, mentors, and other influencers within schools, communities, and organizations from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds.This is a full-time, 12-month, P&A, annually renewable, exempt position based in either Duluth or the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Salary is dependent on experience and qualifications. The salary range is $40,000-$50,000.


  • Responsible within assigned admissions territory for planning and implementing a recruitment program designed to encourage prospective students to apply and enroll at UMD;
  • Travel, at minimum, 4-6 weeks in the fall and 2-4 weeks in the spring to represent UMD at regional fairs/events and high school visits;
  • Work nights and weekends as necessary;
  • Develop and maintain relationships within high schools throughout specified recruitment territory;
  • Territory management which involves application file review for first year and transfer students, make admissions recommendations based on academic requirements, program choice compatibility and provide additional follow up contact via phone call email and text;
  • Assist UMD offices in special services or programs designed to interact with underrepresented populations and coordinate contact with prospective students to assure a unified and seamless presentation of UMD programs, services, and opportunities;
  • Provide prospective applicants and families with counsel on the admission process including academic program information and admission requirements as well as financial aid program and scholarship information;
  • Monitor admitted student progress through financial aid, scholarship, housing, advisement, registration, and orientation processes;
  • Meet regularly with supervisor, counseling team and attend Admissions Office staff meetings;RECRUITMENT ON CAMPUS (35%)
    • Meet individually with prospective students, families, and guests on campus;
    • Maintain contact with qualified prospects through telephone, letters, e-mail, electronic media, and personal contact on and off campus;
    • Participate in large scale call and text campaigns to prospective students;
    • Participate in on-campus visit programming to include Admitted Student Days, Campus Preview Programs, Saturday visit programs, and General Visit Programs;
    • Conduct Admissions Presentations to on-campus visitors and special group visitors;
    • Conduct virtual Admissions presentations to prospective students, families, and group visitors;DATA COLLECTION/EVALUATION & REPORTING (7%)
      • Collect data, assess progress/results and prepare reports related to recruitment initiatives to determine effectiveness;
      • Ensure compliance of recruiting initiatives with UMD policies and procedures and with professional affiliations and best practices;
      • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the trends, regulations, and other factors that affect admission and recruitment activities.ADDITIONAL OFFICE OF ADMISSIONS RESPONSIBILITIES (5%)
        • Participate as a collaborative and supportive member of the Admissions team;
        • Devote time to staying current in the field, participating in professional development opportunities, and bringing innovative and new information to the team;
        • Participate in and grow a professional network of contacts on behalf of UMD. This includes membership and involvement in MACAC (Minnesota Association of College Admissions Counselors), MnACC (Minnesota Association of Counselors of Color), and other professional organizations;
        • Contribute to program development and analyze data to understand trends. Make recommendations for improvement to Admissions practices;
        • Serve on campus and UMN system committees as requested/elected;
        • Actively seek to advance equity, diversity, and inclusiveness within the campus community;
        • As assigned, assist with daily office responsibilities.OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED (3%)

            Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution (BA/BS) Must have a valid driver's license and the ability to travel regionally, sometimes overnight, for extended periods of time by automobile. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
            Two years of professional experience working within counseling, student recruitment, academic advising, or orientation. Undergraduate student experience will be considered. Ability to skillfully present to large and diverse audiences; Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate recruiting plans; Demonstrated ability to work successfully with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and external parties. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, as well as written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and in a team environment; Demonstrated commitment to customer service; Proficiency in computer applications including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Slate, Peoplesoft, and Perceptive Content. Fluency in a second language-preference of Spanish, Hmong or Somali; Ability to analyze and use data to guide work; UMD Alumnus or familiarity with UMD and its programs.
